Wood Carved Tramp Art Wall Comb Box c. 1920 - 1940

Regular price $149.00

Description:   Most likely it was during the Great Depression, this one-of-a-kind Tramp Art comb box was hand-crafted, chipped and carved with pieces of found wood and round tack nails.  This style art form was popular from the late 1800’s through 1940's, each being unique in its own way.  This well-detailed piece of folk art features a wood-carved, 6-layered sunburst at the top along with a cross motif in the center. The comb pocket is also very well decorated with a carved and chipped saw tooth design bordering the lip and a variety of applied geometric wood carvings all over.  It was finished with a reddish-oak, brown wash. This wooden sculpture is in good condition with only a few areas of damage.  There is no doubt this beautiful piece of American folk art is a must-have treasure.

Condition: Previously owned - used.  Construction appears to be strong and secure.  Light patina on wood, somewhat heavier on most tack heads (front and back). A piece of the left, wooden finial on left comb pocket is broken off and missing (as shown).  One saw tooth carving (third from right) is broken off and missing. Two separations or cracks in the base of the backing, right before comb pocket.  Cannot determine if these are from the making of the piece, assembling the pieces, or actual cracks.  The original, nailed-on, wooden supports on back do support these sections which makes us believe they may have been part of the making of the piece.  Not confirmed.  One newer, larger tack on the lower back.
