Antique Dutch Hand-Carved Wooden Clogs - Peasant Shoes c. Early 1900's
Product Description: Wooden clogs date back as far as the 13th century in the Netherlands, then became popular in parts of England, Europe and Scandinavia. They were associated more with the peasant class, worn by both male and females as a common work, dance and every day shoe. This pair of hand-carved wooden clogs were constructed from a piece of single, block of wood embellished with a 2 inch strip of leather attached with nails across the front. Take notice of the hand-carved impressions on the back heal and the iron cleats attached to the wooden soles. The exterior surface still retains the original black varnish or stain, leaving the interior the original, natural wood. As with this pair, it was common for early clog makers to drill a hole in the side of each clog so they can be tied, kept together and hung when not in use. This is a spectacular example of an earlier pair of wooden clog exhibiting the original, un-touched surface.
