Historical 1902 Schooner Yacht METEOR Souvenir Plate Syracuse China New York
Description: This plate made by Onondaga Pottery Co. of Syracuse, New York is a commemorative souvenir for the launching of the Schooner Yacht “Meteor”, built for Kaiser German Emperor Wilhelm II, the Emperor of Germany by the Townsend-Downey Ship Building Co. on Shooters Island in New York, United States. Featuring a gentle scalloped edge with a dark green transfer print of an illustration of the Meteor yacht, the American Eagle on left side and the German Imperial Eagle under the Prussian Crown on right, all under a glaze. During this time, the launching ceremony was a major social and diplomatic event and the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, Alice Roosevelt christened the prestigious yacht on February 25, 1902 in a gesture meant to represent German-American friendship. It has been said that the plates were given to female guests at a luncheon following the launch ceremony on February 25, 1902.

Condition: Used. Considered very good condition. Graphics bright and colorful. Glaze is in good condition. No scratches. One light nick to the rim - left of American Eagle. On the back, three imperfections in a triangular form very likely to be early stilt marks from when the pottery was made (as shown).
